Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 6, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted May. 6, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News May 6, 1915 MEDFORD'S DOOM AGAIN FORETOLD BY STRANGE CULT Medford's destruction has again been forecasted, but in no definite terms, by the same strange cult that predicted the eruption of Roxy Ann, shortly after the departure of the Rev. C.E. Dodge, its leader. The Rev. Dodge stood not upon the order of his going, after a conference with relatives of one of his women converts. A meeting of the sect was held Wednesday night at a home on West Fourth Street, the spirits whispered of a new evil to come upon this city and valley. The what, when or why of the evil was not disclosed. According to an eyewitness, the meeting was a weird affair. The message was received by a lady convert, who, stretched full length upon the floor, face downward, mumbled a strange jargon. This noise, held to a divine dispensation, was interpreted by a woman, who transmitted it in spirit language to a man, who gave it in English to the other worshipers. The chief characteristic of the meeting was the intense sincerity and belief of the followers. The cult is a direct descendant of the branch founded by the Rev. Dodge, whose return to Medford has been prophesied, but never fulfilled. Many women, including, it is said, public schoolteachers, have become imbued with the faith. no regular pastor exists, the members taking turns at leadership. Another meeting will be held next Wednesday. FLAMES CAUSE $15,000 DAMAGE IN GOLD HILL FIRE Gold Hill suffered the heaviest fire damage in its history Wednesday afternoon when a blaze carelessly started by small boys in the loft of a livery stable caused the loss of $15,000, covered only by $200 insurance. Seven structures were destroyed. The flames for a time menaced the main business district. The buildings destroyed were: Livery Barn of Darling & Hodges, and residence belonging to Tom West, adjoining; no insurance Jewelry store of S.V. McFarren; no insurance. Snyder's blacksmith shop; $200 policy on tools. Small barn belonging to I.C. Calhoun, including two horses and a cow; no insurance. Tom Myers' residence, occupied by Mrs. H. West; no insurance. George Lance residence, damaged; no insurance. Just before the fire started the boys were noticed playing with matches in the rear of the Darling & Hodges livery stable. The fire spread with rapidity and the barn was soon a mass of flames that spread quickly to residence of Tom West adjoining.
