Ashland girls move on in state playoffs with win over Canby CANBY - Stefani Talbott has hit some big shots over the second half of the season for the Ashland High girls basketball team. And none was bigger than the 3-point basket she drilled late in Tuesday's state playoff game against Canby. Talbott's momentous trey enabled the Grizzlies to break away from a 39-38 lead with 11/2 minutes remaining and claim a 47-42 victory. The win advanced Ashland (13-13) to the second round of the subtournament, where it will meet Glencoe at Hillsboro Thursday at 5:45 p.m. "Talbott hit some big shots, and that one in the fourth quarter was the biggest," Canby coach Jim Schmieding said. "We had someone closing on her, we had a hand in her face and she still made it." Talbott, a junior wing who didn't play last season, had four 3s on the night and scored 12 points. Junior post Marla Morin led the Grizzlies with 15 points and 11 rebounds and sank three free throws in the fourth period to help seal the win. "We were in a zone most of the game and did a good job on Marla," Schmieding said. "We double-teamed her the whole way, but she hurt us on the boards and got some putbacks. She's a good player." Ashland led 15-11 after one period and 29-22 at the half, but Canby rallied in the third period after clamping on a half-court trap. "They had us rattled for a while," Ashland coach Stephanie Santos admitted. "We were not expecting that half-court trap. We had a lot of turnovers in that stretch, but we regrouped and won the game." Senior wing Laura Ivancie paced the Cougars with 15 points, and senior point guard Megan Rock added 11. Canby finished its season with a 15-10 record.
