PREP SOCCER Lincoln edges South Medford in playoffs Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Nov. 4, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Nov. 4, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News PORTLAND — Gabriel Barnatan scored the go-ahead goal from 12 yards out in the 68th minute as the Lincoln boys soccer team topped South Medford, 1-0, in the second round of the Class 6A state playoffs at Lincoln High Tuesday. The Panthers won the Southwest Conference title and finished the year 10-2-4. They had a four-game winning streak snapped. “I’m super proud of our guys,” South Medford head coach Josh Desmond said. “We’re losing 10 seniors. We had three goals and accomplished two: We won the conference and got to the playoffs. Somebody’s got to win and somebody’s got to lose.” The Cardinals (14-2-1), who advanced to the quarterfinals, played a physical brand of soccer that limited South’s chances. “We had just a few opportunities to score,” Desmond said. “They beat us up pretty good physically.” South goalkeeper Ethan Harvey made nine saves and Josue Reyes recorded a stellar effort defensively, Desmond said. SUMMIT 2, ASHLAND 1: At Ashland, Summit scored twice in the first 15 minutes and survived a last-minute header by Ashland striker Stenley Graham for a road victory in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs. Sophomore Scott Bundy tallied the first goal of the match only minutes into the round of 16 clash, and junior Mack Van Der Velde made it 2-0 in the 14th as the 11th-ranked Intermountain Conference runners-up stunned the sixth-ranked Grizzlies out of the gate. Ashland (9-4-1) cut the deficit in half on junior Bryce Rollins’ strike in the 33rd, but couldn’t deliver an equalizer in a scoreless second half. The Grizzlies squandered several decent scoring opportunities in the final minutes. On perhaps the most dangerous of those, Graham was at the receiving end of a nice cross into the box but his header sailed high. CRESWELL 5, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 1: At Creswell, Cascade Christian’s Kevin Wayda scored in the 27th minute off an assist from Jesse Fretz to tie the match at 1 before Creswell scored four unanswered goals during the first round of the Class 3A/2A/1A state playoffs. Shunt Delira and Liam O'Connor had two goals apiece for the Bulldogs (11-2-1), who were tied at 1 at halftime. The Challengers finished the year 10-4 overall.
