Twenty minutes of the movie "Concussion" had to be scrubbed because the NFL threatened litigation. Why?Autopsies had been done on a few youth football players who had prematurely died and brain damage was shown to begin occurring at the Pop Warner age level. Besides American football making doctors rich with knee and hip replacements, it also in many cases leads to early dementia. Twenty years ago, New York Knicks star Jerry Lucas, author of "The Memory Book," was hired by professional and college football teams to teach memory skills to players who seemed to have memory challenges. He describes one incident where coaches at a Texas University asked him to work with one of their linemen. When Jerry asked this lineman his name, he started humming to himself, "Happy birthday to you." On the third stanza he remembered his name and said, "My name is Dave." Studies have shown that I.Q. and cognitive recognition among a significant number of high school football players diminish as the season progresses. The best and brightest parents do not allow their sons to play football. Mike E. Miles Medford Say no to TPP For years, right-wing extremists have been telling Americans that our national sovereignty is under threat. They are correct about the threat. They just don’t realize who poses it. It’s not blacks or Jews or the U.N. It’s global corporations and the politicians who serve them. Those of us who opposed the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in the early 1990s warned that its “investor-state dispute mechanism” allows corporations to overturn democratically enacted protections of our environment, our health, and our workers. Witness the $15 billion claim TransCanada filed Jan. 6 against the U.S. under NAFTA rules. It argues that our rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline to bring Canada’s toxic tar-sands bitumen through the breadbasket of America deprived TransCanada of profits they were entitled to make. Wherever you stand on the pipeline, the point is that corporations can force us to rescind the laws our city, state or nation has passed or make us compensate them for profits they might have made. Now President Obama and Oregon’s Sen. Ron Wyden and Rep. Greg Walden want to pass the TransPacific Partnership, “NAFTA on steroids.” Defend our national sovereignty. Tell them no. Herbert Rothschild Phoenix Tears shed I, too, shed tears over the schoolchildren and caregivers killed by madmen with guns; tears come rolling down my cheeks when I hear of abortion clinics killing unborn babies and selling their tiny body parts; more tears fall when I hear of abusive alcoholic drug addicted men and women killing their own innocent children; tears for youths just starting in life killed by a drunk driver; tears for the young killed by overdoses of illegal drugs you can buy on any street corner. And they want to take our Second Amendment rights away when our children are being killed by means other than a gun.
