A man Medford police went to check on Tuesday night ran from them, then turned to attack, swinging a homemade weapon at officers, spitting in one's face and breaking the plastic shield between seats in a patrol car, police reported today Joseph Morauski, 22, is jailed on charges of aggravated harassment, menacing, disorderly conduct, interfering with a police officer and resisting arrest. He is held in the Jackson County Jail on $27,000 bail, records show. Morauski's family called to ask police to check on him, and officers found him near the intersection of Crater Lake Highway and Bullock Road at 11 p.m. Tuesday. When Morauski saw the officers, he bolted. Officers gave chase and eventually caught up with him after he had hopped some fences. Morauski swung a large stick with a hook on the end at police when they caught up to him. Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau described the stick and hook as a homemade bayonet. Morauski was eventually taken into custody, but then reportedly damaged the Plexiglas inside a patrol car and spit at an officer. No officers were injured. Police declined official comment on the reasons for Morauski's behavior.
