Dodge, "divine healer" and organizer of the sect known as "Medford Christian Assembly," popularly known as "holy rollers," writes the Mail Tribune from Seattle, protesting the "libelous article" which records his departure following threats by relatives of members of his flock, declaring that he left solely for financial reasons, and is about to return to Medford with his family to resume his ministry. Mr. Dodge's letter, which he requests published, reads in part as follows: "My ministry in Medford since last September has been in legal and honorable pursuit of my vocation, and the Medford Christian Assembly, of which I have been acting pastor since its organization, is a duly constituted religious body, conducting its business and worship in a worthy manner, according to the rights of all religious bodies and in full accord with the Bible." BAND OF GYPSIES TELLING FORTUNES ORDERED TO LEAVE A band of gypsies, believed to be the same aggregation that has kept Grants Pass in a state of semi-terror the last week, reached Medford this morning and were immediately ordered out of town by Chief Hittson. According to the Josephine county authorities, the women members of the band do the devilry while their "men" lay around the camp. Their most daring crime in that city was an attack on Mrs. Fred Merrill, wife of Game Warden Merrill, in an effort to grab her purse. Mrs. Merrill beat off her assailants with an umbrella. The women members were arrested in Grants Pass for shoplifting and other forms of petty thieving. They kept the authorities busy for a week. The police were waiting for the coming of the unwelcome visitors, and were immediately ordered to keep going. During the issuance of the decree, the women of the party jumped out of the wagons and scattered through the business district telling fortunes. Failure to have one's hand read, invariable, brought a torrent of words in a foreign tongue. One wagon is made of Romanian gypsies, and the other of Bulgarians. Their chief possessions seem to be babies and dogs. They are a most unlikely looking lot. Unless they depart by 3:00 o'clock this afternoon, vagrancy charges will be filed against them. The gypsies came overland from Crescent City, after a tempestuous time in Del Norte county.
