COLLEGE FOOTBALL McShay's take on pro Ducks Comment By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard Posted Jan. 11, 2015 @ 4:38 pm By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard Posted Jan. 11, 2015 @ 4:38 pm » Social News DALLAS — Marcus Mariota insisted once again Saturday that he still hasn’t decided if he will enter the NFL draft, but the Oregon quarterback has the blessing of Todd McShay if he chooses to turn pro. ESPN’s draft analyst said any other Ducks considering an early departure for the NFL would be better returning for their senior season. “For all those guys, agents tell them all the time they have got to get to their second contract,” McShay said in an interview Saturday at media day previewing the College Football Playoff championship game tonight between Oregon and Ohio State in Arlington, Texas. “My counter is ‘What if you are not good enough and ready to play?’ You will not get to your second contract. “It is not about coming out and getting drafted, it is about getting ready so when you get in the league you can play at that level. Last year, more than 30 guys that left early did not get drafted and half of the underclassmen who went out three years ago are not in the league now. It is a problem in college football and I think more good information needs to get out there. Players need to make sure they are talking to the right people and not just people trying to get money.” Junior defensive end Arik Armstead is considered the Duck most likely to leave early along with Mariota. The 6-foot-8, 290-pounder has 37 tackles including 2½ sacks this year. “I think he needs another year, to be honest,” McShay said. “I think he has all the physical tools. He’s long and he has strength and natural movement skills. I think he can improve his hands and leverage.” McShay said he has been more impressed this year with junior defensive end DeForest Buckner, who also could declare for the draft. “Armstead is more naturally gifted, but I think Buckner actually played better this year,” McShay said. “I am impressed with his hands and he is doing little things to help himself. He is more of a playmaker. Every time I pop in the tape, he’s making one or two more plays than Armstead.” The other junior who could choose to leave for the NFL is Byron Marshall, a 1,000-yard rusher last year who moved primarily to wide receiver this year and leads the Ducks with 66 catches for 834 yards and five touchdowns. “I think that helps him, it shows his versatility, that he is able to catch and turn,” McShay said. “He’s not an elite speedster, but he is quick. I think he’s better off going back to school, but if he comes out he’s probably a fourth- or fifth-round pick.” Oregon senior cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu was considered a likely first-round pick last year but returned to school. The 5-foot-10, 195-pounder suffered a torn ACL earlier this month and McShay said his stock had dropped a bit even before that and now projects Ekpre-Olomu to go in the second or third round. “Obviously, they will look at him medically and figure out if it is a long-term concern,” McShay said. “Ultimately it will not hurt him that much. It would have been good to see him play in the last two games, but we have a lot of tape on him. He’s been a good player for a long time. He does not have ideal size, but he’s smooth and a playmaker and stronger than his size indicated.” Center Hroniss Grasu is another Duck who returned for his senior season rather than leaving early. After missing three games with a knee injury, he played in the Rose Bowl. “I think he is the best center in the draft,” McShay said. “He is smart and moves well and gets good angles. He does all the little things you want. Centers don’t go high, so maybe third round.” Senior tackle Jake Fisher is also likely to get picked during the three-day draft that begins April 30. “Fisher is not overpowering as a blocker, but he gets in position and executes,” McShay said. “He is probably as good of a pass protector as he is a run blocker. I don’t think he’s a dominant player, but he’s a good player. He has a chance to start down the road in the league so he will probably go somewhere in the third or fourth round.” Safety Erick Dargan did not start until this season, but his seven interceptions have attracted attention. “He’s a ballhawk with good instincts for the game,” McShay said. Mariota may have been the No. 1 pick in the draft last year if he left after his redshirt sophomore season. This time, he is expected to declare for the draft before Thursday’s deadline. He will again be in the mix for the No. 1 overall selection and McShay said he won’t likely fall past No. 6 with Tampa Bay, Tennessee, Washington and the New York Jets likely interested in him. There have been questions regarding how well Mariota will make the jump from Oregon’s spread offense to a pro style. McShay said he has Mariota and Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston at the top of his draft board, but he thinks Winston is more prepared to play in the NFL right away. “Teams are going to want to spend time with Marcus,” McShay said. “He has everything. Size, arm, mobility, explosiveness and exceptional intangibles as a competitor. I don’t buy into the ‘He’s too nice’, I think that is absolutely ridiculous. I think teams need to get with him and figure out if he is capable of improving and progressing. Anticipation and throwing to a spot will be big things for him. There will be a lot of talk and opinions and I think he will be able to do it, but he needs time. If you study the tape right now, it is very easy to see Jameis make those throws.” By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard Posted Jan. 11, 2015 @ 4:38 pm » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. fantasy football Vegas Odds, Top Fantasy Picks for Saturday Divisional Games Jan. 10, 2015 at 9:00 am Fantasy League Guide to Divisional Sunday Jan. 10, 2015 at 6:48 am Fantasy League Guide to Divisional Saturday Jan. 9, 2015 at 6:23 am Best FanDuel, DraftKings 2015 Divisional Lineup Advice Jan. 8, 2015 at 7:00 am Latest Odds, Stat Predictions for Panthers vs. Seahawks Jan. 7, 2015 at 8:00 am Latest Odds, Stat Predictions for Colts vs. Broncos Jan. 7, 2015 at 8:00 am calendar Connect with MailTribune.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services Home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Announcements Obituaries Story ideas Since you asked Alerts Email Alerts RSS Feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed Email newsletter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
