Roseburg clouds SOC race with sweep ROSEBURG -- Eagle Point went into Legion Field Saturday tied for second in the Southern Oregon Conference baseball standings with a lofty 5-1 record. But Roseburg burst the Eagles' bubble with a 9-2 and 8-2 doubleheader sweep. "We were looking at this as a biggie for us," said Roseburg coach Ron Goodell, whose team improved to 6-2 in the SOC. "If we want to be contenders we needed to sweep these guys. No matter who you're playing, if they're winning it gives a team confidence." In the opener, Roseburg rode the effective pitching of Thys Kuitert (3-1) and took advantage of six Eagle Point errors. Kuitert struck out 10, but walked five on the way to his first complete game of the season. "He (Kuitert) was strong, but got behind the hitters too much," said Goodell. "Every time he got in a little trouble he pitched his way out of it." Eagle Point cut the Indians' 4-0 lead in half with two runs in the sixth inning. The Eagles' runs came on a single by Carlos Stevenson and a triple by Mike Newmann, who scored on the hit when a throw got away from Roseburg's cutoff man. But two Eagle Point errors led to five unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to give Roseburg a 9-2 lead. Mitch Black contributed a two-run single to the outburst. Black had two hits and three RBIs, while Indians catcher Richie Charles added two hits, including a fifth-inning solo home run. In Game 2, Eagle Point took a 1-0 lead in the first when Mike Newmann tripled and stole home. Roseburg grabbed the lead for good with two runs in the second on a triple by Ryan Morrison and Ole Sheldon's single. Sheldon eventually came around to score on an error. Another Eagle Point defensive lapse led to three unearned runs in the third. Roseburg parlayed two hits, two walks and two errors into four runs. Jed Brewer (2-0) registered the victory with six strong innings. "He's (Brewer) not a real overpowering pitcher," said Goodell. "He got them to go after some bad pitches. When he got the ball up, they hit it hard." Goodell said Brewer benefitted from some outstanding defensive support: "Our sophomore shortstop Ole Sheldon made three real sharp plays you don't see a lot of sophomores make. And our outfielders continued to flag down balls because they run so well." FIRST GAME Eagle Point ...........000 002 0 -- 2 5 6 Roseburg ..............010 215 x -- 9 9 2 N.
