McGrath started last in a single file start of 12 riders. After just one lap in the 15-lap event McGrath had moved into third place. By the middle of the third lap he amazed the crowd by taking the lead. McGrath won in style as he performed his famous "Nac Nac" move on the final jump, where he kicks out one foot behind him over the saddle as he heads to the checkered falg. Billy Laninovich finished second while Jeff Willoh took third, local favorite Tiger Lacy fourth and Jiri Dostal fifth.
