Bureau of Labor Statistics data released today show both month-over-month and year-over-year gains in Jackson County for the leisure and hospitality sector as well as accommodation and food services. The broad trade, transportation and utilities category, as well as retail, created the majority of new jobs last month, but it wasn't enough to offset the employment declines in all levels of government and schools. Jackson County's seasonally adjusted jobless rate rose to 7.4 percent in July. That's up from 7 percent in June, but well below the 8.5 percent mark of July 2014. The statewide rate of 5.9 percent, released last week, was also 0.4 percent higher than June. The Josephine County seasonally adjusted jobless figure for July was 8.5 percent, up from 7.9 percent in June, but well below the 9.5 percent level of July 2014. Guy Tauer, a regional economist with the Oregon Employment Department, noted the county's year-over-year employment level rose 3.2 percent, adding 2,530 positions. Total payroll employment, however, slipped by 1,250 jobs during the past month. The county's civilian workforce, meanwhile, continued to decline, dropping by 1,227 people from July 2014. "Although the rate has edged up in recent months, it's likely due to new entrants into the labor force and a few layoffs hitting some local jobs," he said. While tourism-related businesses tacked on 620 positions in the past year, professional and business services added 550 jobs during the period, while health care and social assistance grew by 460 jobs. While federal, state and local government dropped off in July, over the past 12 months they have combined to fill 380 new positions. Local education also was 170 positions ahead of summer 2014. During the past year, manufacturing saw a decline of 50 jobs.
