Lucian Moon Patchell, 30, was found guilty Monday in Jackson County Circuit Court of robbing Ashland's U.S. Bank branch in August. A jury previously found Patchell guilty of robbing the Minute Market on Medford's South Oakdale Avenue and the Medford Center Purple Parrot, where angry customers chased him out of the store. A suspect at large in the U.S. Bank and Minute Market robberies, Patchell was arrested Aug. 14 on Stevens Street. He had hidden in some bushes to elude patrons pursuing him from the Purple Parrot, but was discovered by a Medford police dog. Patchell, who lives in the 2700 block of Ashland's Canterbury Lane, had threatened the Purple Parrot clerk with a toy gun that looked like a real handgun, said Tim Barnack, deputy district attorney for the county. It was one of numerous times last year that the video poker parlor was robbed. Three days earlier, Patchell made off with cash from Ashland's U.S. Bank branch on North Second Street. He told the teller he had a gun, but no weapon was seen. On Aug. 9, at the Minute Market, Patchell also said he had a gun but didn't brandish one. In fleeing, he dropped most of the money taken in that robbery at the scene. Jurors in February couldn't decide whether Patchell robbed the bank but found him guilty of the other two crimes. Hearing facts undisputed by Barnack and Patchell's defense attorney, Gary Deal, Circuit Court Judge Bill Purdy found Patchell guilty Monday of the bank robbery and sentenced him to eight years in prison. Purdy dismissed an additional charge against Patchell of possessing methamphetamine.
