Poor serving haunts South in loss to Indians ROSEBURG � If not for a dismal night serving, the South Medford High volleyball team likely would have pulled a big upset Tuesday night. The Panthers missed a dozen serves and No. 11-ranked Roseburg did enough good things at the end to pull out a 15-6, 13-15, 16-14 Southern Oregon Conference victory. "Serving was our downfall," South Medford coach Jerry Hagstrom said. "When we kept the ball in we did a lot of good things." South Medford stormed back from a 14-7 deficit to tie the third game at 14-14, but failed to get over the hump. "We showed a lot of resiliency," Hagstrom said. "We just needed to push one more play at the end." Senior middle Carrie Doren led the Panthers with 11 kills, while Crystal Glover had 10, Karla Zenz eight and Kellie Thomas seven. "Crystal Glover played a great match, offensively and defensively," Hagstrom said. Junior outside hitter Katie Kahn led Roseburg with nine kills and senior outside hitter Megan Morley had eight. Defensive specialist Randi Slone registered 17 digs. Roseburg improved to 8-1 in the SOC and 19-4 overall with the win. "We went in the tank in that third game," Roseburg coach Bruce Myers said. "Our passing was awful. The way we were playing at the end, we were very fortunate to win." NORTH MEDFORD 15-15, KLAMATH UNION 7-9 � At Klamath Falls, third-ranked North Medford (14-1, 8-0 SOC) fashioned a balanced attack with seven players registering at least one kill and six with three or more. Junior middle Candace Fleener paced the Black Tornado with six kills and three blocks. Jill Carrigan, Kendra Mitchell and Kara Hwang each contributed four kills for North. Klamath Union came out strong in the opening game behind Kaylene Munson and took a 3-1 lead. The Black Tornado countered by reeling off nine unanswered points. Munson�s hitting also kept the Pels competitive in the second game. North led 10-5, but KU puled within 1-9 before some unforced errors allowed the Black Tornado to close out the match. Mitchell�s attacks in the middle swung the momentum. For Klamath Union, Munson had 17 kills and four blocks, while Lorisa Bliss added eight kills and two blocks. Not only did North�s Kaci Maldonado provide 29 assists, but the senior setter kept the Pels off balance with three dump kills. ASHLAND 15-15, GRANTS PASS 5-2 � At Grants Pass, Ashland had seven aces as a team and registered 20 kills to post an SOC victory over Grants Pass. Sophomore Lichen Murray was outstanding with seven kills out of nine attacks with no errors. Ashland, 5-3 in the SOC, hosts Roseburg on Thursday CRATER 3-15-15, EAGLE POINT 15-13-6 � At Central Point, Crater overcame a terrible first game to win a close conference match. In the second game Crater had to come back from a 13-10 deficit to push the match to three games. In the third game the Comets, 4-5 in the SOC, notched 15 of their 34 kills. Senior Janelle Sapienza had seven of her 10 kills in the third game. Junior Nichollete LaBell had seven kills, four solo blocks and five assists blocks for the Comets.
