COLLEGE FOOTBALL Beavers ring in new era with spring game Comment By Kevin Hampton Corvallis Gazette-Times MailTribune.com By Kevin Hampton Corvallis Gazette-Times Posted Apr. 17, 2015 at 8:23 PM By Kevin Hampton Corvallis Gazette-Times Posted Apr. 17, 2015 at 8:23 PM » Social News CORVALLIS — Why come to today's Oregon State spring game? It's the start of a new era for Beavers football, defensive back Justin Strong said. "So (the fans) can start with it," Strong said. "There's going to be a lot of physicality, you get to see a lot of new faces compete, see what a little preview of the 2015 season brings." The game starts at 1 p.m. in Reser Stadium. Events surrounding the game begin at 8:30 a.m. "It's always fun to go out here and put the pads on and go out there and have some fun, throw the football around," receiver Victor Bolden said. "So I'm excited to go out there Saturday and make some plays." The Beavers will be divided into two teams, Orange and White, each coached by assistant coaches. "The quarterbacks are not really on any team," coach Gary Andersen said. "They'll be in a different colored jersey so they can go on either." The teams will play what amounts to an actual game, with some adjustments. The first half will consist of two regulation quarters and there will be two 15-minute quarters with a running clock in the second half. "It's not going to be a practice like how it was in years past," defensive lineman Jaswha James said. "It's going to be a game, so I recommend you show up, because you're going to get a show." There will be no special teams play with the exception of the PAT and field goal kicks. On a field goal, Andersen said it will be just the holder, long snapper and kicker that take the field. As usual, a kick that goes through the uprights counts as three points. "If it (misses), students, fans, a lot of participants will have opportunities to put points on the board with a lot of activities that are going on for the spring game," Andersen said. "So it's going to be great. Our kids are excited to compete, get into that environment. It's very, very important for our kids to get in front of a crowd and play. I think that is one of the most important things that can take place with this young team." The game will be full contact with the exception of the quarterbacks. Andersen stressed that the defensive players will not be allowed to tackle Seth Collins, Nick Mitchell or Marcus McMaryion. That could be interesting with how often the quarterbacks run in the system. "It's definitely a different format from what we had last year and the year before with coach Riley, but I think it's going to be a great time," offensive lineman Gavin Andrews said. "I think it's going to be a great way to end the spring with an actual game, coming from scrimmages to having a running clock and stuff. So I'm really looking forward to that."
