Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend January 13, 2006 Teens accused of vandalism Eagle Point youth face criminal-mischief charges By ANITA BURKE Mail Tribune A group of Eagle Point teens, including members of the wrestling team, faces criminal-mischief charges for allegedly spray-painting graffiti on the North Medford High School campus late Wednesday. Medford police have cited seven teenagers on charges of first-degree criminal mischief and have identified three additional suspects, Medford police Lt. Mike Moran said. A woman walking on the North Medford track at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday saw a white minivan and a white sedan park nearby. Teens with cans of spray paint piled out of the vehicles and started marking outbuildings, soda machines, signs, sidewalks and more, Moran said. When the teens spotted the woman, they fled and she called police. A short time later, a patrol officer near the intersection on Delta Waters Road and Crater Lake Avenue spotted a white minivan filled with nervous teens and stopped it. Inside he found seven teens and cans of spray paint in Eagle Point High School’s colors — blue, gold and white. The teens accompanied the officer back to the high school campus to see the graffiti, which included the initials "EP." Police estimated the damage at about $2,000. Advertisement So far, police have cited a 15-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl from Eagle Point who are homeschooled and five Eagle Point High School students, including two girls, ages 15 and 17, and three boys, ages 16, 17 and 18. School resource officers from both North Medford and Eagle Point high schools worked Thursday morning to track down three additional suspects, including a 17-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl, who both attend Eagle Point High School and an 18-year-old Eagle Point homeschool student. Eagle Point Police Chief Dave Strand said an officer interviewed the suspects and reports would be forwarded to Medford for citations. Eagle Point High School Principal Mari Brabbin said vandalism is punishable by suspension and students involved will be temporarily removed from class. The length of suspensions is based on a student’s past behavioral record, she said. The contract students sign to participate in sports also calls for a two-game suspension for athletes caught in vandalism, she said.
