Irish rally past Panthers in fourth quarter Saturday Jan 14, 2017 at 12:01 AM Although the South Medford boys basketball team has showed promise this season, it has been hindered by an inability to close out games. For the second straight game, South Medford had a double-digit third-quarter lead but let it slowly melt away as Sheldon rallied in the fourth quarter for a 68-62 victory at South Medford High on Friday. “We’re getting better but they need to learn how to play with a lead and keep a lead,” said Panthers head coach James Wightman of his squad. “It’s frustrating right now but I don’t harp on them too much. They show signs they can play but when we get a lead we play tight. That’s our big thing.” Spurred by a pregame celebration as South Medford High officially dedicated its basketball floor “Dennis Murphy Court” in honor of legendary Panther basketball coach and Athletic Director Dennis Murphy, who retired after last season, South Medford came out strong Friday. The Panthers (5-8, 0-2 SWC) led 37-30 at halftime and went up by 10 points midway through the third quarter but began to make poor decisions and the Irish became more active on the glass, getting many of their points on second- and third-chance opportunities. The Panthers also relinquished an 18-point lead to Willamette on Tuesday. Kaleb Franklin had 11 points and five steals for the Panthers, while Riley Martin and Chase Cota lead the team with 12 points apiece. Steven Phillips added 10 points. Sheldon’s Will Swank scored 17 of his game-high 25 points and made all four of his 3-pointers in the second half — three coming in a fourth quarter that saw the Irish outscore South 19-11.
