Mail Tribune / Roy Musitelli Fantastic finish in the 1,500 Ashland’s Morgan overtakes Crater contingent to win high-powered distance race in dual meet By DON HUNT Mail Tribune CENTRAL POINT — The Crater and Ashland High distance runners often train together in the offseason. They stay in the same living quarters at the Steens Running Camp during the summer. They trade stories. They share strategies. They are pals. But when they line up for a race, "It’s every man for himself," Ashland senior David Morgan says with a grin. Advertisement In a 1,500-meter race that had the feel and the firepower of a district meet, Morgan surged past Crater’s Isaac Stoutenburgh and Geoff Donaldson with 200 meters to go to win in a sizzling early-season time of 4 minutes, 2.13 seconds. Stoutenburgh was clocked in 4:03.13, Donaldson in 4:03.23 and Crater sophomore Jake Keyser in 4:07.23. All four runners set personal records in the Thursday dual meet, with Donaldson clocking a stunning 12-second PR and Keyser setting an eight-second lifetime best. The Crater boys cruised to a 102-39 victory in the team competition, while the Comet girls claimed a 99-44 triumph. "I was kind of hoping to break four minutes, but it was still a fantastic race," said Morgan. "To have three guys run in the 4:03 range at a dual meet is almost unheard of." To give the performances perspective, consider that at last spring’s Southern Oregon Conference district meet, only Klamath Union’s Kevin Pellegrino (3:57.56) and Roseburg’s Gavin Weaver (3:59.93) ran faster than the top three finishers did Thursday. Crater middle distance runner Greg Dallaire acted as a "rabbit," setting a brisk pace for two laps, then dropping out. Stoutenburgh, who led Crater to its first-ever district cross county title and a fourth-place finish at the state meet last fall, took over from there, with Donaldson on his heels. Morgan was 4-5 meters back through the first two laps, but the gap widened to about 7 meters with 1½ laps to go. "I wasn’t sure I was going to stay in contact with those guys," said Morgan, who ran the equivalent of a 4:19 mile. "I wasn’t comfortable with how big that gap was." But Morgan surged on the final lap, passing Donaldson and inching within a couple meters of Stoutenburgh. Then, with about 180 meters left, Morgan shot into the lead and kicked hard to the finish line. "Morgan ran an awesome final lap and I ran a bad one," said Stoutenburgh, whose previous best time was 4:04.19. "It’s pretty obvious that I need to work on my finishing kick." Donaldson, meanwhile, had considered the 800 to be his best event, but after his huge PR in the 1,500 Tuesday, he may have to reevaluate. "It felt good to run with the lead pack," Donaldson said. "I’m not very experienced in the 1,500, but I felt like I learned a lot today and I’m going to put it to good use the next time out." While the 1,500 stole the show, there were other competitors who registered impressive marks. Among them: Crater’s Adam Goff, who won the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.49, the 300-intermediate hurdles in 43.52, the 100 in 12.02 and the pole vault at 12 feet. Crater’s Mike White, who launched the shot put 47-6. Ashland’s Cameron Barleen, who edged Crater’s Tom McGann to win the 800 by 1/100th of a second in 2:05.74. McGann came back to claim the 3,000 in 9:50.07. On the girls’ side of the coed meet, Ashland’s Natalie Hemphill had a productive day, clocking a lifetime best of 4:57.78 to win the 1,500 and 2:26.03 to win the 800. Hemphill advanced to state in the 800 last year but believes the 1,500 is probably her best event. "You need raw speed to win at the state level in the 800, and that’s something I just don’t have," Hemphill said. "But I think I have the speed and the endurance to do well in the 1,500. My goal was to break 5 minutes today (in the 1,500), and I did it pretty easily. That’s encouraging." Myriah McMillin won the shot put (32-6) and the discus (111-5), and Jessica Wasniewski took the 100 (13.39), 200 (27.95) and ran a leg on the winning 4x100 relay to lead the Crater girls.
