Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend March 15, 2006 Mystery man in coma Police want to know why Ronald Clark Ingle, 62, was lying unconscious alongside a rural road in Sams Valley By ANITA BURKE Mail Tribune Investigators waited more than a week for an unconscious man found lying alone at the side of a rural road in Sams Valley to wake up and tell them what happened. But Ronald Clark Ingle, 62, of Medford, remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Providence Medford Medical Center, unable to speak or even breathe on his own. Now the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department is turning to anyone else who might know anything about what happened to him last week. A passerby called the sheriff’s department at 4:42 p.m. March 6 to report a man lying near the rural intersection of Meadows and Beagle roads , sheriff’s Detective Charley Retzer said. The caller reported seeing a white man about 6 feet tall with a large build and brown hair and facial hair standing over the downed man at the roadside and a black Jeep parked nearby. When deputies arrived, they found Ingle lying on the ground with no one around, Retzer said. Advertisement He had minor-looking cuts and bruises around his nose and upper lip and was unresponsive to questioning. He also appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Detective Sgt. Rich Fogarty said. There was no evidence he had been robbed. An ambulance transported him to Providence, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit with a serious head injury. "We didn’t know how serious at first and we hoped he would wake up and tell us what happened," Retzer said. "Did he jump from a vehicle? Was he assaulted? "It’s really a mystery." The preliminary investigation points toward an assault on Ingle, Retzer said. With Ingle unable to answer their questions, investigators hope someone saw something and will come forward. They haven’t identified the other man seen at the scene or located the black Jeep, Retzer said. "We’re trying to look for any kind of help," he said. Fogarty said Ingle had regular run-ins with deputies. Court records show he has a history of drug use, driving under the influence of intoxicants and other driving infractions. Ingle has family in the Medford area, including a daughter who has maintained regular contact with the hospital and investigators trying to piece together what happened, Fogarty said. Investigators declined to release the daughter’s name.
