Parents: Get your kindergartners registered Comment Teresa Thomas Mail Tribune Follow @@teresathomas_MT MailTribune.com Teresa Thomas Mail Tribune Follow @@teresathomas_MT Posted Sep. 2, 2016 at 3:06 PM Updated Sep 2, 2016 at 4:14 PM Teresa Thomas Mail Tribune Follow @@teresathomas_MT Posted Sep. 2, 2016 at 3:06 PM Updated Sep 2, 2016 at 4:14 PM » Social News Local report The Medford School District is encouraging all parents to register their kindergartners as soon as possible. At Jackson Elementary, in particular, only about half the projected number of kindergartners had registered as of Thursday afternoon. If parents wait to register until the first day of school, it makes figuring out staffing difficult, said district spokeswoman Natalie Hurd. “It’s difficult to plan when you don’t know how many kids to expect,” she said. The first day of school for first- through 12-grade Medford students is Tuesday, Sept. 6. Kindergartners don’t officially start until Monday, Sept. 12. However, there will be a kindergarten "soft start" next week, during which time students and parents will be invited to the school for a one-hour orientation. The soft start is an opportunity for parents to speak with kindergarten staff about their child’s needs and any transportation, health or other issues their child is facing. Parents will be notified who their child’s teacher is on Thursday evening, and on Friday, the kindergartners will be invited to either a morning or an afternoon session so they can see their classroom, find their cubbies, bring their school supplies and meet their teacher and classmates. Parents can register kindergartners next week during regular school office hours from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
