Mail Tribune 100: July 25, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jul. 25, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Jul. 25, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News July 25, 1916 ERECT MEMORIAL TO DISCOVERER ON CRATER LAKE RIM Supervisor Steel is preparing to construct directly on the rim of Crater Lake a memorial to John W. Hillman, who discovered the lake in 1853. It was designed by Aoscoe A. Johnson, of Medford, and will be built by H. A. Jansen, also of Medford. It will be placed at the spot the discovery was made, at a point above Lightning spring, about two miles westerly from the hotel, and will consist of reinforced concrete seat finished in pure white, facing the lake and built in a perfect semi-circle with a diameter of 17 feet. The paving within will be composed of concrete tile in maroon. Two inscriptions will appear commemorative of the event and the man, one on each end of the seat in bronze, as follows: "Erected to the memory of John W. Hillman, who discovered Crater Lake at this point June 12, 1853. Mr. Hillman was born in Albany, New York, March 29, 1832, came to Oregon in 1849 and died in Hope Villa, Louisiana, March 19, 1915. "Suddenly we came in sight of water. We were surprised, as we did not expect to see any lakes and did not know we had come in sight of Klamath lake. Not until my mule stopped within a few feet of the rim of Crater Lake did I look down, and if I had been riding a blind mule, I firmly believe I would have ridden over the edge to death. — John W. Hillman." LOCAL AND PERSONAL The Rev. Albert H. Gamman and a large delegation from Jacksonville Presbyterian church have arranged to attend the installation service of the Rev. Alfred A. J. Hogg on Thursday evening. Several will also attend from the Phoenix, Ashland and Central Point churches. Both the Methodists and the Christian church of Medford will join in the service. A splendid musical program, vocal and instrumental will be contributed. The C. E. society will serve refreshments at the close of the service. Every member of the church is urged to be present. The public are cordially invited to attend this service. Everybody will be made welcome.
