The final tally was 4,166 for Campbell, 51 percent, to 3,977 for Wallan, 48.7 percent. There were also a handful of write-in votes. In the other close local result from Tuesday's election, small-business owner Nita Lundberg topped retired police officer Terry Marks 1,167 to 1,139 in a race for a vacant seat on the Eagle Point School Board. The Medford race was tinged by a 2014 teachers' strike, during which Wallan was among the board members singled out by the teachers union for her stands in opposing some union demands. Campbell is closely connected to the teaching community. His wife teaches at Phoenix High School and his mother and stepfather both teach at North Medford High School. Campbell said in an earlier interview that he began paying closer attention to what was happening in the Medford School District last year during the contentious labor negotiations, which ended in an 11-day teachers' strike. He has worked for Sis-Q Cellular since 2005 and, on the side, works as a website editor and North Medford High School sports event announcer for Table Rock Sports Network. The other two Medford races were not close, with Janet Lightheart drawing nearly 72 percent of the vote in her race against Curt Ankerberg, and Lilia Caballero pulling in almost 65 percent against two opponents, including former board member Kevin Christiansen, who finished second with 24 percent. Also winning in Eagle Point was Ana Mannenbach, who received just over 75 percent of the vote in her race against Jason Libby. In Central Point, one incumbent, Ed Lindbloom, was defeated by challenger Cathy Salmon, who received 57 percent of the vote. Incumbent Cindy Tilley Case easily fended off a challenge by Dawn Copple, receiving 61 percent of the vote. Ashland city voters once again agreed to tax themselves to support extracurricular activities in the Ashland School District, supporting a five-year local option levy with 73 percent in favor. Homeowners will pay $1.29 per $1,000 of assessed value for the levy, which raised $2.6 million in the current school year. It provides funding for everything from athletics to library services,  music and art. In the lone contested race for the board of the Rogue Valley Transportation District, Medford lawyer Tonia Moro won handily over Mary Wooding, capturing  67 percent of the vote.
