At the beginning of the month, Jackson County Health and Human Services mailed about 1,200 letters to the parents of children who were missing vaccinations required to attend public and private schools, preschools, Head Start and certified child care facilities. The parents were told they had until today to vaccinate their child or complete the process of claiming a nonmedical or medical exemption. If students can't provide the necessary immunization or exemption documentation today, school staff are required to send them home, said Tania Tong, Medford’s supervisor of student services. “There are so many different requirements and vaccines for different age levels that, for some families, it can just be really confusing,” Tong said. “And sometimes families just haven’t sent in the documentation of their vaccines,” she added. According to Oregon Health Authority, children 18 months or older attending preschool, a certified child care facility or Head Start must first get 17 shots, including vaccines protecting them against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox and hepatitis. Tuesday afternoon, Shawn Gaudern and his son Skyler Gaudern, a seventh-grader at White Mountain Middle School, were waiting in line to receive the TDaP (diphtheria/tetanus/pertussis) vaccine. Gaudern said he’d received three letters and four phone calls from the school and county reminding him of the Wednesday cutoff. “They left messages saying that if (Skyler) didn't get it done by tomorrow then he couldn't come to school,” Gaudern said, adding that he’d taken the afternoon off work to get his son the vaccine. “I didn't really know where to get it, and I didn't know what it was,” he said, admitting he hadn't read the county’s letter very thoroughly. “I thought he was current.” Amanda Corsbie and her niece Aaliyah Soto, a student at Kennedy Elementary School, also were in the waiting room Tuesday. Corsbie only recently got custody of her niece and was surprised when she received a letter saying Aaliyah needed vaccines for polio, hepatitis A and B, measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis by Feb. 18. “Her mom told me she had everything,” Corsbie said. Jackson Baures, Jackson County Public Health Division manager, said he won’t know until the beginning of March how many students were excluded from facilities countywide. But since sending out the letters Feb. 4, public health nurses have reported an increase in the number of people seeking vaccines, he said. Public health nurses gave about 415 immunizations in the first two weeks of February, compared with 260 immunizations in the last two weeks of January. “In the light of the measles outbreak, we are really hoping that parents choose to vaccinate instead of getting a nonmedical exemption,” he said. Of the 32,989 kids currently attending facilities in the county, 2,126 claimed nonmedical exemptions, and 196 claimed medical exemptions. As of March 2014, parents who wish to claim a nonmedical exemption for their child must first meet with a health care provider or watch an educational video about immunizations.
