Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend January 26, 2004 SOU’s McGrorty tabbed Oregon small college athlete of the year BEAVERTON — Southern Oregon University All-American running back Dusty McGrorty was honored as Oregon’s small college male athlete of the year at the Oregon Sports Award Sunday night at the Nike World Headquarters. McGrorty, a three-time finalist for the Ad Rutschman Award, named in honor of the longtime Linfield football coach, capped his gridiron career last fall as the greatest rusher and scorer in Northwest small college history. The Warrenton native became the first SOU student athlete ever to receive the honor, which was presented by former New York Yankees infielder and 1998 World Series MVP Scott Brosius. McGrorty, a 6-foot, 220-pound tailback, who competed in the 2003 Blue Gray Classic on Christmas Day, finished the 2003 season with 1,703 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns. He set 10 school and eight regional records and finished with 5,414 career yards (No. 4 all-time among NAIA players), 79 touchdowns (No. 2 all-time) and 474 points (No. 2 all-time). The all-time national rushing touchdown leader (75) finished second in the NAIA for both rushing (189.1) and scoring (14.7) in 2003 to earn first-team American Football Coaches Association and third- team Associated Press Little All-American honors. Also honored Sunday night was Southern Oregon University volleyball player Kristina Matchett, who finished as a runner-up for the small college female athlete of the year. North Medford’s David Faaeteete was a runner-up for the prep male athlete of the year. Rob Folsom, also of North Medford, was a finalist for the prep male athlete of the year.
