Henley stings Phoenix, 2-1 KLAMATH FALLS Phoenix surrendered two early goals and Henley went on to pin a 2-1 defeat on the Pirates in girls District 6 soccer Thursday. The loss was Phoenixs third in its last four league matches and put the Pirates (5-6-1, 3-3 District 6) out of the title chase. "Realistically, we need to win out and make the league playoffs," Phoenix coach John Doty said. Katie Millard scored for Henley on a breakaway at the fourth minute, and Katy Lynch followed up a ball that bounced off the crossbar for a goal four minutes later. Freshman Kat Cox came on in goal after Henleys two scores and played superbly, making two fine saves in the second half and seven overall. Helen Shorland converted a penalty kick at the 38th minute after the Hornets were called for a hand ball in the penalty area. The teams failed to score after intermission. "In the second half, there were a couple of good chances for both teams," said Doty. "There were a lot of battles for possession at midfield." Phoenix freshman defender Sarah Kieffer provided some strong play in the first half. "Sarah Kieffer was creating an awful lot of stuff we werent able to take advantage of," said Doty. The Pirates also received good ball control and passing from junior midfielder Hannah Wilt. "They have a very physical style of play," said Doty. "I had a lot of players I had to pull off the field after they got racked up."
