Where did the expression "holy Toledo!" come from? — Jan S., Medford That’s an easy one, Jan. Toledo, Spain, became one of the great European centers of Christian culture after it was liberated from the Moors — or stolen, if you’re a Moor — by Christians in 1085. The town’s history goes way back. It passed from its original inhabitants into the hands of the Romans in 193 BC. It was taken by the Vis-igoths seven centuries later, and by the Moors two centuries after that. To the Spanish Catholics of the 11th century, recapturing Toledo was a "holy" cause. It became the capital of Castille until Madrid became Spain’s capital 500 years later.
