St. Mary's Jackson softball player of year As Shawna Jackson went, so went the St. Mary's Crusaders' offense this softball season. When Jackson got on base, the Crusaders scored and scored big. When opponents kept her off base, St. Mary's was vulnerable. The senior catcher was highly effective behind the plate as well as the Crusaders won the Class 2A/1A District 6 softball championship. For her efforts, Jackson was named MVP as St. Mary's placed four players on the first-team all-star list. The Crusaders' Robin Snider shared coach of the year honors with Cascade Christian's Wally Nye. "She was our leadoff hitter and pretty much our offensive spark," Snider says. "She usually scored the first run of the game. Whenever she got on base, you pretty much knew she was going to steal her way around the bases. She's a quick, heads-up runner, who took advantage of other teams' mistakes." Joining Jackson on the first team for St. Mary's was pitcher Lani Brophy, who had a 41-17 overall mark during her four-year stint with the Crusaders, Sarah Fetty and Kim Hansen. Fetty, a junior pitcher and center fielder, hit .407 overall and went 4-0 in league with a 1.52 ERA. She walked only three and struck out 31 in 23 innings of work. Hansen, a senior utility infielder, batted .409 and led the team in assists with 57 and on-base percentage at .629. The Challengers placed three members on the first-team squad in Laural Kelley, a junior pitcher, senior catcher Becky Gettman and junior shortstop Whitney Brookins. Kelley had a 10-6 overall mark on the season with a 1.39 ERA, while Gettman earned first-team honors for the fourth straight year and hovered around the .400 mark in hitting. Brookins hit .396 and started her third consecutive season at short for Cascade Christian. Jackson hit .472 in league play, with an on-base percentage of .548 and stole 15 bases. For the season, she hit .486 with an on-base percentage of .584, while stealing 33 bases. "It was fun to watch her run the bases the past three years," Snider says. "She was a tough out to get. She had a hit in nine of our 11 league games. When we lost to Cascade and in our playoff loss, we were unable to get her on." Once she donned the catching gear, she neutralized many an offense. She threw out three runners in league and 10 in 24 games overall. "She didn't have many opportunities because our opponents didn't have many runners," Snider said. "When they did get on, they didn't attempt to steal on Shawna very much. All of the teams respected her quickness and her arm strength and accuracy."
