How long will they remain lowered? — Lynn S., Rogue River Perhaps fittingly, federal flags will stay at half-staff in honor of President Reagan until July 4, Lynn. That’s not related to the Independence Day holiday, however. It’s because of the traditions of the federal flag code, which call for the nation’s flags to be lowered to half-staff for 30 days following the death of a sitting or former president. The code calls for flags to fly at half-staff at all federal buildings, grounds and naval vessels through the United States and its territories for durations that vary according to the distinction of the deceased. It is to fly 10 days at half-staff after the death of the sitting vice president, the chief justice or a retired chief justice of the United States Supreme Court, or for the speaker of the House of Representatives. Advertisement For an associate justice of the Supreme Court, a member of the Cabinet, a former vice president, the president pro tempore of the Senate, or the majority or minority leaders of the U.S. Senate or the House of Representatives, flags fly at half-staff from the day of death until interment. For a senator, representative, territorial delegate or the resident commissioner of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, federal flags fly at half-staff on the day and the day after death. Upon the death of a governor of a state, territory or possession, the flag is flown at half-staff at all federal facilities in that governor’s area from the day of death until interment. Just to be safe, the president also may order the flag to fly at half-staff to mark the death of other officials, former officials or foreign dignitaries. The president may also order half-staff display of the flag after other tragic events as warranted.
