Mom Stop: Think about gun safety for kids' sakes By Lydia Seabol Avant The Tuscaloosa News MailTribune.com By Lydia Seabol Avant The Tuscaloosa News Posted May. 26, 2015 @ 7:53 am By Lydia Seabol Avant The Tuscaloosa News Posted May. 26, 2015 @ 7:53 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2325,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> About 22 million children in the U.S. live in a house with at least one gun, according to Nationwide Children’s Center for Injury Research and Policy. In the South, where gun ownership is almost as a part of the culture as college football and sweet tea, it’s not something that many parents likely think about when they send their child to a relative or friend’s house to play. But there could be scary consequences: Research has shown that nearly 1,500 children die from shootings every year. While half of all unintentional shootings among children happen at home, almost just as many occur in the home of a friend or relative. Parents are likely to share information on whether they have a dog or a pool in the backyard. They are likely to make it well known that their kids are allergic to peanuts or bees. But how often do you ask fellow parents or other relatives about if there are guns in the home, and how they are stored? Admittedly, I never have — but it’s something I need to change as my kids get older and are away from home more. “I always ask about guns, and if yes, how they are stored,” said Nicole Richardson, a Tuscaloosa, Alabama, mother of four. Richardson also asks about pets, whether there are any aggressive dogs in the home and possible access to water, because of the risk of drowning. But, she said gun safety is also a question that is important to ask. “For me, it’s not worth the worst-case scenario,” Richardson said. She asks other families about their gun safety, but also shares how her family stores firearms. Local mom Diane Shaw has a similar policy. “When my kids were young enough for play dates, I always asked about guns in the home, where they were stored, if locked, if ammunition is kept separately, etc.,” Shaw said. “Likewise, I shared our information with the parents of children visiting us. Now that my kids are teens, I remind them before they go to a new place to be aware of any hazards.” Keeping guns secure and out of reach is necessary when kids are involved, said Stevie Ellis, mom of three. “My kids are too young to have any understanding of how dangerous a gun is, so leaving them with someone who thinks it’s OK to leave a gun unattended is a no-go,” Ellis said. “I absolutely plan to teach my children proper gun safety when they are mature enough to handle them.” According to Kidshealth.org, here are some basic gun safety tips, besides asking fellow parents about how guns are stored in their homes: Teach kids that if they come into contact with a gun to stop what they are doing, do not touch the gun, leave the area and tell an adult right away. If you have a gun in the home, it’s important to: Take the ammunition out of the gun. Lock the gun and keep it out of reach of kids. Hiding the gun is not enough. Lock the ammunition and store it apart from the gun. Store the keys for the gun and the ammunition out of reach of children. When handling or cleaning a gun, adults should never leave the gun unattended. Lydia Seabol Avant writes for The Tuscaloosa (Ala.) News.
