The gates open at 6:30. The cost is $5 for adults and $2 for kids under 18. Children 4 and under will be admitted free. It’s the first of three exhibition games for the team. The exhibition games raise money for the Ashland Booster Club, Ashland High School, other Rogue Valley soccer clubs and Fuego. "We have full-time non-profit status now," said Fuego’s acting general manager and goaltender Mike Walsh. "We are trying to improve soccer in the Rogue Valley." Fuego is the reigning two-time La Liga champion. La Liga has 16 teams from the Rogue Valley and Crescent City, Calif. The All-Star team is comprised of the best two or three players from the other 15 teams. Advertisement Christlieb, Sharp to take soccer skills to Division I A pair of Ashland High soccer stars are continuing their careers at the next level. Alex Christlieb and Matt Sharp, both two-time all-Southern Oregon Conference standouts, have signed on to play at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif., and Bradley University in Peoria, Ill., respectively. Both are NCAA Division I programs. Christlieb starred as a central fullback for the Grizzlies, while Sharp did most of his prep work in the central midfield. Christlieb will join former South Medford forward Pat Lower with the Gaels and, through his future college coach, Steve Rammel, gets the opportunity to train with the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer at the end of July. Pirates’ Russell signs with Oregon Tech volleyball Phoenix High senior Kelsey Russell is part of the new recruiting class for the Oregon Tech volleyball program. The 5-foot-8 Russell is a two-sport star for the Pirates, serving as a first baseman for the No. 3-ranked softball team in addition to her exploits on the volleyball court. She was named first-team all-Skyline Conference each of the last two seasons as a setter for the Phoenix volleyball team. OIT head coach Amanda Mitzner expects her to redshirt as a college freshman. SOU star heavyweight Whitehead to transfer ASHLAND — Mike Whitehead, one of Southern Oregon University’s top heavyweight wrestlers, will transfer to NCAA Division I Missouri for his senior. Whitehead compiled a 58-12 record and posted back-to-back third-place finishes at the NAIA Championships. "I had a great time here (at SOU), and it was a really tough decision," said Whitehead. "I’m not looking forward to leaving, but I am looking forward to being part of an up- and-coming Division I program." The Central Point native and former Crater High state champion, who attended North Idaho Junior College as a freshman, won all 15 of his 285-pound dual-meet career starts as a Raider. He also defeated three nationally-ranked Division I foes last season and spent the entire 2002-03 campaign ranked No. 1 in the NAIA before suffering one of only five season setbacks in the national semifinals. Whitehead went 26-5 as a junior and ended the season two pins away from equaling the school’s career pin record (24). "Except for winning a national title, Mike has accomplished nearly everything possible to accomplish at the NAIA level," Raider coach Mike Ritchey said. "I can’t blame him for the decision, and we wish him the best of luck. He knows the door is always open here if he changes his mind." Missouri placed 16th at the 2003 NCAA meet.
