Medford gave its greatest patriotic demonstration Friday morning when a throng exceeding 5,000 people from every section of Jackson County saw the Liberty Bell. The train bearing the treasured heirloom of American history arrived at 2:15 o'clock. Officials with the train said it was the largest early morning gathering on the continental trip of the bell from Philadelphia to the San Francisco fair. When the train pulled into the station there was an outburst of cheers, and a general lifting of hats at the sight. For a moment afterwards there was appreciative silence. Scores of children made up the throng. The Liberty Bell itself is a plain and homely piece of metal. It looks like the pictures, familiar to everyone. It was closely guarded by a squad of Philadelphia policemen who distributed literature as souvenirs of their home city to the American people. State officials of Pennsylvania occupied the private coaches. Owing to the earliness of the hour there were no formalities. At every stop of the bell through Oregon Thursday, there were great patriotic demonstrations. A spy of some European war lord mingling with the patriotic throngs would have an unfavorable report to make. Before the arrival of the bell a holiday gathering filled the streets, many going to the picture shows, the band concert at the park and the dance at the Nat. When the fire whistle blew announcing the coming of the Liberty Bell special, crowds began to go towards the depot, with autos loaded with passengers from every direction. Over 500 autos of all kinds and makes were parked about the depot. It was the greatest gathering in the history of the city. Before the arrival of the special train, Sergeant Pat Mego of the police gave a demonstration of snare drum playing, and executed his ability with such unbounded fervor that he broke the drumhead. This incident spoiled the fife and drum corps program.
