Leagues offer juvenile center tours The League of Women Voters invites voters to tour the 42-year-old Jackson County juvenile detention center and hear its director discuss a bond issue for a new one. The leagues of the Rogue Valley and Ashland have scheduled tours at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 29 and 3 p.m. Sept. 30. The center is at 1504 Armory Drive, Medford. Visitors are asked to call the Juvenile Department at 774-4800 to sign up for a tour. The Rogue Valley league will hear from Alan Young, director of juvenile services, at a luncheon at noon Thursday at J.J. North's Grand Buffet, 1016 N. Riverside Ave., Medford. The Ashland league will hear from Young at a luncheon at noon Sept. 29 at J.J. North's in Medford. Both no-host luncheons are open to the public. The Rogue Valley and Ashland leagues have joined with the American Association of University Women to endorse Measure 15-2 in the Nov. 2 mail-in election. Voters will get explanatory pamphlets starting Oct. 8 and ballots in mid-October. Measure 15-2 proposes a $16.5-million bond issue for a 40-bed juvenile center in downtown Medford to replace the 20-bed center, which was built in 1957 and added to in 1981. Its passage will require a majority of votes cast and a majority of voters participating. The current center is within the South Gateway shopping area and the county eventually will have to vacate the site. A $22.7-million bond issue for a 60-bed center failed narrowly in last year's general election. Both leagues are offering speakers about the bond issue.
