In an interview Sunday with the Daily Courier, Daniel said a search effort has determined the car is probably a silver 1999 Mercury Sable and that an oil slick has been spotted just downriver from Schroeder Park, where the car likely sank. "We have reason to believe based on witness statements that the occupant is (still) in the car" and presumed drowned, he said. With high water and poor visibility from near-record rain this month, the river level is too high to allow for a safe recovery effort, he added. Asked how long it may be before a recovery effort can be mounted, he said, "It depends on the weather" and how long it takes river levels to come down. The search effort got underway just before 11:30 a.m. Saturday after witnesses reported a silver vehicle drove into the river at Schroeder Park west of Grants Pass. At least one witness reported seeing a man in a silver vehicle drive in an apparently deliberate manner down a boat ramp and into the river at about 25 mph. Daniel said Sunday that another witness downstream about a half-mile at Lathrop Landing then saw the vehicle floating down the river. Searchers have since found a water-logged owner's manual to a 1999 Mercury Sable sedan downstream from the scene, strongly suggesting the car was that make and model. Earlier reports said the vehicle was a pickup truck.
