Blank buried a 3-point basket from deep along the baseline with five seconds remaining in the game to lift the Vikings — the top-ranked Class 3A team in the state — to a heart-stopping 55-53 victory over the Mustangs. Mazama senior guard Levell Hesia topped all scorers with 35 points. The Vikings moved to 4-0 in league play and 12-3 overall with the victory. "We had a great game plan and the kids carried it out," said Hidden Valley coach Norm Hater, whose Mustangs fell to 2-2 in league play and 6-8 overall. "We were able to slow down the tempo and we had the lead most of the game. "But we just couldn’t get over that last hurdle." Hidden Valley led by four points and had possession of the ball with 40 seconds remaining in the overtime, but a couple of turnovers led to the Mustangs’ undoing. Hidden Valley had a chance to win the game in the final few seconds, but Josh Gotfried’s jumper in the lane missed the mark, as did Jeff Klug’s follow shot. Klug led Hidden Valley with 21 points. "A foul or two could have been called in that last minute," Hayter said, "but they hit the big shot at the end."
