I've seen the irrigation canals stretching across the orchards and always wondered where the water came from. — Victoria B., Talent Actually, Victoria, that's two quick questions, but we'll give you a freebie. The short answer for the first question is that Talent Irrigation District, formed in 1916, gets its water from Hyatt, Howard Prairie and Emigrant reservoirs. The long answer can be found on the district's Web site, " target="_blank">www.talentid.com. TID and its cousins, the Medford and Rogue River Valley irrigation districts, irrigate about 35,000 acres in the region using the flows of Bear Creek and the Little Butte Creek watersheds and from storage facilities in the Rogue and Klamath river basins. Advertisement The Web site gives a detailed history and includes some pretty cool maps if you've got the time to hunt a little bit. You won't be seeing water in those canals for much longer, Victoria, since TID is shutting down for the season on Thursday. Wanda Derry, office manager, says the three reservoirs are about 65 percent of capacity with a total of 72,425 acre feet of water. "We're ending the season with a good carryover for next year," she says. The canals will be running again next spring, probably sometime in April.
