Coolidge wins title MONMOUTH - Trevor Coolidge recorded a season-best time en route to the Class 2A state championship in the 1,500-meter run Saturday at Western Oregon University. The St. Mary's senior calmly outlasted a torrid pace by the rest of the competitors to post a time of 4:01.35. That mark is the second-best in state-meet history to record set by James Longoria of Nyssa in 1995 (4:00.98). Coolidge, who claimed the 3,000 title on Friday, used the fast pace to take a small lead and then pulled away with a 50-second finish in the final 300 meters. "I was really trying to go after that (state-meet record)," said Coolidge. "I didn't really get pushed in the 3,000, but today was a much faster pace." The St. Mary's boys finished tied for 13th with Stanfield at 20 points. In the girls meet, senior Kristen Zielony finished her career as a Crusader with a third-place time of 16.59 in the 100 hurdles. Sophomore Leah Sawyer recorded a lifetime-best time of 5:06.60 in the 1,500 and placed fourth. As a team, the Crusader girls finished ninth with 22 points. Making its first state appearance since 1995, the St. Mary's girls 4x400 relay team took seventh, while the 4x100 relay squad also placed seventh with a season-best time of 52.79.
