Darby helps lead Phoenix past Knights TALENT - April Darby had to sit out all of last year's softball season with a knee injury. The Phoenix High junior catcher probably had her best game of the year Tuesday against North Valley. Darby went 3-for-3 as the Pirates defeated the Knights 4-1 in Skyline Conference softball at Hagler-James Park. Darby's day included three stolen bases, one run scored, one RBI and a solid game defensively. "That kid (Darby) has been in a slump all year," Phoenix coach Rich Ficek said. "Maybe she's coming out of it. She's a good power hitter and she's very good behind the plate." With Darby providing an offensive impetus, pitcher Tiffany Ross (8-3) was doing the job on the mound by limiting the Knights to two hits. Ross struck out four and walked two. The Knights' only run came in the second inning when Hannah Plant walked, moved to third on two passed balls and scored on a groundout by Tara Ironside. The Pirates didn't commit an error in the field. First baseman Sutton Jackson and Amanda Moore at second provided Ross with solid defensive support.
