With three doubles teams and two singles players in the semifinals — assuring them all trips to state — Grizzlies coach Dick Streng was a like a kid in a candy store. "This was a really cool day," said Streng. "There were so many Ashland players on the courts, it was hard to decide who to coach." Ashland scored 46 points to outdistance Roseburg (35) and North Medford (27). The Grizzlies also set a school record for players advancing to state. The previous high of six was set in 2003. Advertisement The state tournament is May 19-20 at Portland Tennis Center and May 21 at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center. The match of the day for Ashland was the three-set doubles final between Grizzlies Cory Lescher and Myles Rooklyn and North Medford’s freshman tandem of David Longmire and Michael Tribble. Ashland’s pair came out on top, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3, when a Longmire attempted smash found the net and ended the Black Tornado team’s title hopes. "It’s good to head to state as number one," Rooklyn said. "It took some time to get there. It took some work, too." Both doubles teams will play their last matches together at state. Ashland will lose its top group to graduation in June, and North Medford’s unit will split up. "(Longmire and Tribble) aren’t doubles players," said Black Tornado coach Larry Fields. "Both of them are singles players, and they are both outstanding. They have played amazing as a team this year, but there is no doubt that they are going to be even better as singles." North Medford picked up the consolation final win in doubles as its team of Brandon Como and Arthur Huynh defeated South Medford’s Jason Folda and Luke Snelling in two sets. On the singles side of the court, Roseburg’s Spencer Grieb defeated Ashland’s Ross Mather, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3, to take the conference championship. Mather praised Grieb after the match saying, "He was more aggressive than me. That’s where he beat me." Still, there was plenty for the Grizzlies to be happy about. "The word for today was ‘copacetic,’" said Streng, "The boys played well, very well, and now we can look to state." Grants Pass teammates Andrew Morris and Andy Sinclair found themselves on opposing sides of the net in the consolation singles match, and Sinclair came out on top in two sets.
