Through decibels measured at South Medford’s football game against Thurston on Oct. 30 at Spiegelberg Stadium, as well as “digital cheering” online for the week that followed, South Medford was able to easily outdistance its challengers by generating 158,390 total decibels. South Medford competed against other high schools in Illinois, Iowa, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Wisconsin. Natalie Hurd, the school district’s communications specialist, said prior to the competition that should South Medford prevail, the winning funds would go toward school activities and field trips, professional development and extracurricular needs. A trophy ceremony to celebrate South Medford’s achievement will be at 11:10 a.m. Friday at the high school involving representatives from U.S. Cellular and South Medford High School. Flutie says both parents die in same hour Former New England Patriots quarterback Doug Flutie says both of his parents died within an hour of each other. Flutie says in a statement posted on his Facebook page that his father, Dick, died of a heart attack in a hospital in Florida, where the family moved years ago. He said Wednesday that less than an hour later, his mother, Joan, also suffered a heart attack and died. Flutie wrote: "They say you can die of a broken heart and I believe it." Flutie did not elaborate on the circumstances of their deaths, but called them "incredible parents and grandparents" who had been married for 56 years and were always there for their children. Sabonis, Wiltjer lead No. 10 Gonzaga to win Domantas Sabonis scored 26 points and Kyle Wiltjer added 23 to help No. 10 Gonzaga beat Northern Arizona 91-52 on Wednesday night. It was the first game of the season for Gonzaga (1-0), after their season opener against Pittsburgh last Friday was called off at halftime due to extremely slippery court conditions at the Armed Forces Classic in humid Okinawa, Japan. Gonzaga trailed Pitt 37-35 when that game was cancelled. Sabonis, a 6-foot-11 sophomore, made 12 of 13 shots in limited minutes and looked recovered from a recent back injury. Gonzaga shot 53 percent and won the rebound battle 53-31 to notch an easy victory.
