Mail Tribune wins 11 awards SPJ contest covers Pacific Northwest By BILL KETTLER The Mail Tribune won 11 awards Saturday in the Society of Professional Journalists' annual Pacific Northwest Journalism Contest. Reporter Paul Fattig took a first place award in the comprehensive coverage category for a series of stories, "Healing the Wounds of War." Reporter David Preszler won awards for investigative reporting and business writing. The contest recognizes the best newspaper work in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Alaska during 1999. The Mail Tribune competed against papers with 25,000-to-50,000 circulation. Preszler won a third-place investigative-reporting award for his story about Todd Surgeon, a Medford hot-tub salesman with a history of legal troubles. His story about Ashland software developer John Loram took second place in the business feature category. Photo editor Steve Johnson won a first-place award for feature-page design for a series of three covers from Tempo, the Mail Tribune's weekly arts and entertainment guide. Johnson also won a second-place award for illustration for his work in the Mail Tribune's 1999 "Our Valley" special section. Illustrator Mary Hills won a first-place illustration award for her whimsical rendering of the Rogue Valley in the year 2050 and two other pieces. Reporter Chris Bristol received honorable mention in the investigative reporting category for a story about a Jackson County audit that criticized Bern Case, manager of Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport. Reporter Mark Freeman took a third-place award in the food, fashion and home category for a story about lawn mowing. Reporter Bill Kettler took a third place in arts coverage for a story about Mary Janke, an Applegate valley woman who makes grandma and grandpa dolls. Reporter Melissa Martin took second place in the government reporting category for her story about Gold Hill's struggle to preserve its municipal water supply and improve fish habitat in the Rogue River. Reporter Bill Varble took second place in the general column category for his "Between the Lines" Sunday columns.
