Local business: Umpqua Dairy recognized for excellence in products Roseburg-based Umpqua Dairy Products Co. has been recognized for excellence in the production of its cultured milk products, milk quality and ice cream quality by Quality Chek'd Dairies Inc. during the 2001 Spring Management and Leadership Conference. Umpqua was also selected as one of five finalists for the Irving B. Weber Distinguished Award for Quality Excellence. To become a finalist for the Weber Award, member dairies first received a Merit Award from Quality Chek'd for exceeding the organization's stringent product quality standards for purity, freshness and flavor. Merit Award winners are selected based on the results of independent laboratory tests on products throughout the year, plus quality control factors determined during on-site reviews by Quality Chek'd staff. On-site audit factors include commitment to total quality, effective production planning, efficient inventory and loss control programs, outstanding plant sanitation, cleanliness and housekeeping. Umpqua Dairy also received top awards in the "Quality Chek'd - 2001 Judges' Choice" nationwide contests with the dairy's ice cream, buttermilk and cottage cheese samples judged to be the best of all products submitted.
