North Valley whips Chieftains MERLIN - A quick score and a 7-0 lead and the Rogue River football team had the taste of a possible upset in its mouth. Just minutes later, North Valley cleaned the Chieftains' palate. The Knights romped to a 41-14 Skyline Conference win on Friday and, in doing so, clinched its first playoff berth since 1997. Rogue River blocked a punt early in the game and followed up with a 4-yard touchdown toss from Matt Frederick to Josh Munoz. But North Valley turned up the heat on both sides of the ball to rattle off the next 41 points. "All year long, we've given up the fewest points in the conference," said North Valley coach John George, whose team has outscored its opponents 233-49, "and tonight our offense was very efficient." Colin Beard responded to the Rogue River score with a 56-yard scoring burst, and just minutes later, quarterback Tim Cunha hooked up with Cole Parmelee on a 29-yard touchdown pass. Cunha was 7-of-8 through the air for 111 yards and two touchdowns. "He's (Cunha) continued to progress," said George. "Each game he's gotten better, and he played great tonight in only a quarter and a half of work." First-team all-conference receiver Parmelee continued to shred opposing defenses with 71 yards on only three catches and a 60-yard punt return for a score. Beard had 91 yards rushing to lead a balanced attack that netted 279 on the ground. But once again it was the North Valley defense that stole the show. Rogue River managed only 99 yards of offense and just 27 on the ground. "Except for that first score, our defense played a great game," said George. "Even when the younger kids got in there and played, they did a good job." The Chieftains fell to 0-7 overall and 0-5 in Skyline play. North Valley remained the only unbeaten team in conference play at 4-0. It has a showdown at Henley next Friday. David Crocker had 89 yards on 17 carries to lead the Cougars, who fell to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in conference play. Seth Morehouse scored on runs of 59, 3 and 3 for Mazama (2-5, 2-2 Skyline), while Eric Brosterhous hauled in touchdown passes of 30 and 58. The Challengers (2-3) feasted on a ground game that netted 343 yards and limited Chiloquin to 76 yards in total offense. Cascade running backs Zach Mellow and Mychal Sha each rushed for more than 100 yards and combined for three touchdowns. Mellow was the game's leading ground gainer with 123 yards on 18 carries, while Sha picked up 101 yards on 16 tries. Brandon Armstrong added 79 yards on the ground. Sha scored on a pair of 1-yard runs, while Mellow busted a 43-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. Cascade capped a 77-yard drive late in the first quarter with a 1-yard touchdown pass from Gettman to Kevin Roberts. Ben Kinney's interception at the Panthers' 24 set up the Challengers second TD. Gettman went the final yard for the score. The Challengers put together a 12-play, 76-yard march and scored on Sha's 1-yard run 28 seconds before halftime to go up 19-0. Chiloquin's only touchdown came on a 70-yard kickoff return in the third quarter by Brett Balderas that cut the Challengers' lead to 26-6. Nolan Lenderman scored the lone touchdown for Prospect on a 28-yard pass from Danny Skull. Days Creek led 26-8 at halftime.
