I have a minor correction for you. Crater Lake is actually not "the continent’s deepest lake." That attribution has to go to Canada’s Great Slave Lake (see www.nps.gov/crla/brochures/deeplakes.htm on the Web). But we can safely say "the country’s deepest lake." Next in line, Tahoe is practically a puddle by comparison. :) You are correct, sir! Corrections are always a major thing for us at Since You Asked’s World Geography Headquarters. We want to get it right, er, correct. Looking at that list you pointed us to, we found some interesting stuff. The world’s deepest lake is more than a mile down (Lake Baikal in Siberia, Russia, 5,369 feet). A mile is 5,280 feet. We checked. Great Slave in Canada’s Northwest Territories at 2,015 feet beats Crater Lake’s 1,943 feet by a measly 72 feet. Are you sure they’re not measuring in Canadian feet? We hear they’re smaller. Lake Tahoe, as you said, follows Crater Lake as the world’s eighth-deepest lake. And, yes, all you Johnny Carson fans: There is a Lake Titicaca, and it’s the 12th deepest lake in the world at 1,214 feet. It’s in Peru. While we’re at it, let us clarify some mangled syntax another reader exposed from that earlier Since You Asked. When we said: "Katmai Peak collapsed in 1912, just like Mount Mazama (Crater Lake’s predecessor), and is Crater Lake’s infant cousin, just beginning to fill with water," we didn’t mean that Mount Mazama collapsed in the same year.
