That play proved decisive as the Pirates ended a four-game losing streak with a stunning, 7-6 upset of defending Skyline Conference football champion Mazama at Viking Field. Phoenix picked up its first conference victory after two defeats and ended the seventh-ranked Vikings’ (4-2, 3-1 Skyline) nine-game league winning streak. "We’ve had a lot of adversity this season," Phoenix third-year coach Gordy Crowston said, "but the kids have hung in there. Tonight it paid off for us." Advertisement Mazama scored on Jared Caulfield’s 59-yard run with 2:24 left in the second quarter to cut the Pirates’ lead to 7-6. Then right defensive end Hull broke through to block the potential tying point. "(Hull) overpowered their wing and came inside and got his hand up," said Crowston. "He got the whole ball. He smothered it. "We knew it was big at the time, but it turned out to even be bigger." Hull and Tyler Jackson spearheaded the Pirates’ defensive line that limited the Vikings to 180 yards on the ground and 25 yards passing. Senior middle linebacker Jimi Lockheed was also instrumental in helping the Phoenix defense hold explosive Mazama to just one touchdown. "Our defense was very stout," said Crowston. "Our kids were staying with their responsibilities. There wasn’t a lot of yards to be had out there. It was pretty tough sledding." The Pirates (2-4, 1-2 Skyline) needed another big defensive play near the end of the game to keep their lead. Mazama drove from its 40 to the Phoenix 19 with 40 seconds remaining. But sophomore cornerback Joey Sheppherd came up with a critical interception in the end zone on a third-down play. "(Sheppherd) had inside position and went up and made a great play on the ball," said Crowston. "It was getting pretty exciting at the end." The Pirates put together a 65-yard, 12-play drive capped by Lockheed’s 1-yard touchdown run with 4:55 to go in the opening period. Ryan Harvey’s PAT proved to be the winning point. Junior tailback Max Boots paced the Phoenix offense with 78 yards on 27 carries. It was the 6-foot, 190-pound Boots’ first action since suffering an injury in the first quarter of the Pirates’ second game of the season against South Umpqua. "(Boots) gave us a big lift because he can run inside," said Crowston. "He gets us the tough yards." The victory salvaged a season that was heading in the wrong direction after the Pirates won their season opener against Sutherlin. "It’s one step where we need to go," said Crowston. "We’re keeping it in perspective. But it was a great win for us." It was all Chieftains (3-3, 1-2 Skyline) in the first half as Frederick sandwiched a pair of touchdown passes to junior Joey Parrillo around his own 5-yard touchdown run. Jamison Loop added a 35-yard field goal at the end of the second quarter for the Chieftains Tyler Wallace ignited a Hidden Valley (2-4, 1-3 Skyline) comeback in the second half. Wallace rushed 20 times for a game-high 163 yards and added a 39-yard touchdown run for the Mustangs’ final score. Frederick rushed for 110 yards and completed 9 of 15 passes for 92 yards. Parrillo caught eight passes for 83 yards. North Valley (3-3 overall) led 12-8 after Greg Richardson broke off a 59-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. But the Pelicans used a long pass and a pass interference on the Knights to move down the field in the waning minutes. Drew DeChenne, who caught five passes for 74 yards, returned an interception 73 yards for North Valley’s other score. Bennett scored on a 17-yard run in the second quarter and KU notched a safety in the first period. Richardson rushed for 79 yards on eight carries, and Knights quarterback Josh Makepeace completed 11 of 22 passes for 138 yards. Cascade Christian dropped to 2-3 overall, while the Honkers improved to 2-4. Cody Chartier led Lakeview with 93 yards on 10 carries and scored on a 35-yard run. The Challengers’ touchdowns came on two Tyler Boice passes and a 5-yard run by Nick Gomez. Boice hit Ryan Kridel for a 30-yard score as the Cascade kept it close early. He ended the game with a 30-yard pass to Mike Clark. Parker passed for 171 yards. The Loggers (2-3, 2-2 Sky A) exploded for 22 second-quarter points after the teams played to an 8-8 tie in the opening period. Butte Falls took the lead for good on a Spence 1-yard run after James Grieve blocked a Cowboys punt and Derek Burns returned it 40 yards to the North Lake 1. Parker’s 11-yard touchdown run sent the Loggers into halftime with a 30-14 lead. Spence gained 90 yards on 17 carries, while Parker was 7 of 11 passing.
