However, their unbeaten string was broken at the hands of the Richland (Wash.) Knights, 13-8, at Thorne-Rider Field. Three teams remain as the tournament enters its final action today. All three — North Medford, Richland and the Bitterroot (Mont.) — have one loss. Today, Bitterroot and Richland play at 11 a.m. (PDT), with the winner North Medford at 2 p.m. Richland took control with a four-run sixth inning for an 11-8 lead, then closed out North Medford with two more runs in the eighth. Advertisement All of the Mavericks' runs came in the third and sixth innings. North Medford looked to have an excellent scoring opportunity in the first as Zack Earle walked and Aaron Marlia was hit by a pitch to give the Mavericks two base runners with nobody out. However, neither was able to score as Jordan Bostwick popped out to second, Andrew Jones struck out and Earle was caught trying to steal third. Richland also put a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the first, but Marcelino Morales was left stranded on second. North Medford went down in order in the second, but the Knights got their offense going with four runs in their half of the inning. Brett Jacobs and Josh Rapacz started the inning with back-to-back singles, and both scored on Kevin Lathim's triple. Ryan McKinney's single scored Lathim, and McKinney then advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Morales' second straight single. North Medford had a strong response in the top of the third as it put five on the board to take the lead. Mason Yeigh led off with a single and then Hayden Wolfe and Earle both walked to load the bases with nobody out. Marlia also drew a base on ball to drive in Yeigh with the Mavericks' first run. Jones' double brought home Wolfe and Earle, and Marlia scored on Shea Bedortha's groundout to knot the score at 4-4. Colin Sowers singled in Jones to put North Medford into the lead. But Richland regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third. Cody Shepherd grounded to Marlia, who bobbled the ball and then overthrew Bedortha putting Shepherd on second. Rapacz then singled home Shepherd to knot the score at 5-5. Lathim drew a walk to give the Knights runners at first and second, and McKinney's single put Richland into the lead. Bedortha then tried to throw out Lathim at third, but the throw was wild and Lathim scored the Knights' seventh run. North Medford missed an opportunity to tie the game as Earle and Marlia were in scoring position with only one out. However, Bostwick struck out and Jones flew out to right to end the inning. Neither team scored in the fifth, but the Mavericks regained the lead with a three-run sixth. Yeigh and Wolfe opened the inning with consecutive singles, and Marlia's bloop single loaded the bases. Bostwick sent a line drive to center field, which then took a bad hop and got past Morales in center field, allowing three runs to score and giving North Medford an 8-7 edge. But Richland went back into the lead with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. The first two Knight batters were retired, but Danny Jacobs began the rally with a double, and he scored on Grant Erwin's single. Shepherd also singled, and Brett Jacobs then sent a grounder to Jones. His throw to Bedortha, however, pulled the first baseman off the bag, and in Erwin scored to give the Knights a 9-8 lead. Rapacz singled home Shepherd and Jacobs scored on a double steal for an 11-8 Richland lead. Richland concluded the scoring with two runs in the eighth. Morales and Erwin singled, and both scored on Brett Jacobs' double to the right-field fence. For the first time in the tournament, the Maverick pitching staff did not have a complete-game effort. Jared Imhausen started on the mound but left in the third after allowing seven runs and eight hits. Dylan Bedortha took over and was tagged with the loss after surrendering six runs and eight hits. Wolfe completed the game for the Mavericks. Offensively, North Medford had 11 hits, with Marlia and Wolfe going 2-for-3, Yeigh 2-for-4 and Sowers 2-for-5. Bostwick was the RBI leader with three.
