The two-time defending state champion Comets scored 209 points to beat out second-place West Linn (157½ ). Newberg took third (151½ ) and Estacada fourth (135½ ). Roseburg finished sixth. "This shows the strength of the program," said Crater coach Greg Haga, whose team was competing against six of the state’s top 10 teams at the event. "I’m extremely proud of what we did." Jake Vizinni (112), Chase Maloney (160), Collin Brooks (171), Ron Lee (189), Cody Clark (215) and Charlie Alexander (275) all lived up to their top rankings at the tournament and brought home gold medals. Maloney put an exclamation point to the weekend by scoring a technical fall against second-ranked Abe Hogel of Thurston, 23-8. Maloney was named most outstanding wrestler for the tournament. Clark defeated Pendleton’s Joel Williams 3-1 in the 215-pound final in a battle of No. 2 vs. 3 seeds. Advertisement At 145 pounds, Jon Bernhardt’s only loss of the day was in the final, where he fell to top-ranked Andrew Dewater of Marshfield, 8-2. Tyler Weathers placed fourth at 119 pounds and Zack Kezer was sixth at 103 pounds. EAGLE POINT INVITATIONAL — At Eagle Point, North Medford scored four individual titles to clinch the team championship at the 14-team event. North’s 233½ points beat out second-place South Albany (215) and third-place Eagle Point (189½ ). South Medford finished fifth with 177 points, while Hidden Valley took 13th with 10 points and Rogue River 14th with 9. North Medford’s Ryan Folsom won the 160-pound weight class, with teammates Chris Platt (171) and Justin Stancliff (189) following with individual titles. Tim Endecott notched the Tornado’s final victory at 275. Brian Henrichs (215) and Juan Aguilar (103) represented South Medford with individual championships, while Jake McCoy notched Eagle Point’s lone title at 145. WILLAMETTE INVITATIONAL — At Eugene, Grants Pass led an onslaught of teams from Southern Oregon that captured four of the five top spots in the 10-team tournament. The Cavemen won five championship matches to post a victorious team total of 260 points. Phoenix was runner-up at 186 followed by Illinois Valley at 184. North Valley finished fifth (130). Grants Pass received championship performances from Tyler Baker (112), Tyler Stewart (125), Richard Alves (130), Chris Hotch (145) and Tanner Marval (152). Phoenix had winning efforts from Nick Amuchastegui (140) and Rickey Farrell (171). Additionally, the Pirates lost four other matches in the finals. Zack Giesen (160) and Brennon Olander (275) were the North Valley winners. Illinois Valley didn’t post any victories in the finals, but had six wrestlers triumph in third-place matches.
