The junior ace surrendered a run in the first inning but blanked Sprague thereafter as the Panthers captured a 2-1 victory in their first action of the season Monday in the Medford Spring Break Classic at U.S. Cellular Community Park. Moore struck out 17 batters and allowed just three hits and five walks. “She competed today,” said Panthers coach Miranda Gillaspie-Smith. “She battled all the way through and worked herself out of a rough first inning.” An RBI double by Alex Ledgerwood put Sprague in front 1-0 in the opening frame. Moore escaped a one-out, bases-loaded situation in the top of the third and then in the seventh, after giving up a leadoff single to Sprague’s No. 9 hitter, Moore set down its top three hitters to lock up the victory. South Medford (1-0) scored the tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the third with two outs. Katie Meyer doubled home Jewel Burgoyne-Russell, who had singled, to tie the contest at 1-all. NORTH MEDFORD 8, SOUTH SALEM 0: North Medford got two hits apiece from Taelor Mayben, Teanna Gonsalves and Alex Barry and Sarah Thomas picked up her fourth win at the Medford Spring Classic at U.S Cellular. The Black Tornado (4-0) scored five runs in the first inning, with Mayben, Tra Kucera and Gabby Rosales notching RBI hits. Thomas struck out four with one walk and four hits allowed in four innings. Gonsalves pitched the final three innings and didn’t allow a hit or walk with five strikeouts. EAGLE POINT SPLITS: Eagle Point opened the Medford Spring Break Classic with a 16-6 win over Sheldon but later lost 9-6 to Dallas at U.S. Cellular. The Eagles moved to 1-2 overall. PHOENIX FALLS TWICE: After Phoenix wasn’t able to keep up with La Salle, which claimed a 22-0 victory, the Pirates were upended by Elmira, 26-1, in the Medford Spring Break Classic. Baseball GRANTS PASS 7, MILWAUKIE 7, 6 inn.: At Grants Pass, Grants Pass' Vince Zavolta scored after a wild pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth inning set off a wild scenario that saw the go-ahead run negated on a tag out moments before a second Caveman could cross the plate. Due to bad weather and sloppy conditions, the game was called after six innings and will not be continued as part of the Crater Spring Break Invitational. Monday’s other tournament games were postponed. In the fifth inning, Jake Stoffel and Brennen Lauffenburger had back-to-back RBI doubles for Grants Pass (1-0-1). Chase Anderson went 2-for-3 with one run for Milwaukie (2-0-1). ASHLAND 9, KELLIS 6: At Phoenix, Ariz., Ashland belted three doubles and a triple in a four-run third inning to erase a 2-0 deficit and tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh to earn an opening win in the Greenway Festival. Ashland starter Nick Sanderson pitched 5 2/3 innings for the Grizzlies (3-0) and also went 2-for-5 with an RBI double in the third. Peyton Fuller was 2-for-4 with a triple and scored twice, Aaron Scott was 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBIs and leadoff hitter TarQuin Daley tripled.
