"It was unbelievable," Ashland coach Dick Streng said of his team’s play Thursday. "It was a coach’s dream come true." "They did a lot of the things that we’ve been working on all year," he added. "It just seemed like they all put it all together today." District action resumes at 10 a.m. Saturday with the championship semifinals. The finals are slated to take place around noon. Ashland singles players Ross Mather and Kyle Lachmund breezed through their opening-day matches, while the Grizzlies’ doubles teams of Cory Lescher and Myles Rooklyn, Gabe Hoxmeir and Nick Spurlock and Loren Woodley and Jack Turner also advanced into Saturday’s semifinals. Advertisement The top four singles and top four doubles placers qualify for the Class 4A state tournament, set May 19-20 at the Portland Tennis Center and May 21 at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton. Also advancing into the semifinals in doubles was North Medford’s top team of David Longmire and Michael Tribble, while Roseburg’s Spencer Grieb and Andrew Besson will join the aforementioned Grizzlies in singles. While Mather and the Lescher-Rooklyn tandem appeared to be a lock for the state tourney entering Thursday, Streng said he was especially pleased with the performance by his No. 3 doubles team of Woodley and Turner. The duo sailed through their second-round match with the Grants Pass tandem of Quin Tipton and Marty Christenson, then upset No. 3-seeded Josh Borelli and Logan Wetherell of Roseburg, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, to punch their ticket to state. "That was probably the one match that came out of the alleys and courts and surprised most people and players and, I think, even them," Streng said of the upset.
