Jackson St. A man in his 20s handed the clerk a note that said he had a gun and wanted money, police said. The note threatened to harm the clerk and patrons in the business, Medford police Lt. Mike Moran said. The clerk handed over an undisclosed amount of money. The robber tucked the money inside his brown, suede jacket and left the business, he said. The clerk summoned police when the man left at about 11:30 p.m. Officers searched the area with a dog, but were unable to find the robber. The dog tracked the man north on Bartlett Street, but didn’t catch up with him. The robbery suspect was described as a white man with dark hair, a mustache and goatee. He is about 5 feet 9 inches tall with a thin build, police said. He wore a white baseball cap with Asian language characters on the front. Robbers have targeted Mario’s and similar lottery centers such as the Purple Parrot in the past in what police call "crimes of convenience" because the businesses are open late and thought to have cash on hand. Moran said the demand note, common in bank robberies, was unusual for a late-night lottery-center robbery. Anyone with information about the robbery can call Medford detectives at 774-2230.
