Our assessor was an elected official and served the citizens in the county who elected him to represent them. The county administrator should not have been involved in this at all. Jordan does not supervise this position nor does he have any control. The same is true for any county elected position. It seems that there is a power grab happening and Jordan needs to step back and get a reality check. The taxpayers of this county deserve to know what is happening and that the elected officials that they put in office are not being coerced or being harassed by the current county administrator, Danny Jordan. As an elected official myself, I find it disturbing that a severance check was issued to an elected official to resign. I also find it disturbing that the replacement of this elected official was not noticed and that it was filled by an applicant that was not properly vetted. County commissioners, please take this seriously and look into the activities of the county administrator. Barbara Christensen Ashland Attacked in the park Attacked in the park, once again! This is information for all of the self-appointed park police that are out there. At least know the law before you verbally attack someone in the park. ADA rules under federal law dictates everything to do with service animals. You are allowed to ask two questions of a service dog owner: (1) Is this a service dog, and (2) what service does this animal provide. My answers are: Yes, this is a service dog and she alerts me to a medical condition. This allows me time to get to a safe place before I have an episode. It is definitely not cool to yell at the person and accuse them of lying and cheating. You do not repeatedly threaten them with a "really large fine." If you do not believe this a a legitimate service animal, then you contact either a park ranger or police officer. As this person said, during her tirade, the park belongs to all of us. It was the one thing with which I agreed — it even belongs to a citizen with a disability. Most people are gracious and understanding, and I say much thanks to you all. C.J. McLaughlin Ashland Terrorists or protesters? I recently saw a letter written by a lady about the protest up in Bend. She claims since they were white they won't be labeled as terrorists. How if they were not white they would be called something else. How untrue, and shame on her for trying to bring racism into something it's not. Were the rioters and looters called terrorists in Ferguson? No, in fact, politicians said they were expressing themselves. Even though they torched their neighborhoods, stole from stores, and people were killed. This has happened many times and is never considered terrorism. So stop trying to bring race into an issue where it's not relevant. The writer sounds as bad as Leonard Pitts, always trying to bring race up and blame white people. All races practiced slavery, all races engaged in conquest, but only white people are told they must be eternally punished. We will never move forward until we learn to forgive.
