Instead, the girl who had been abused since she was 6 years old told someone what had been happening to her. On Thursday, her abuser, Rafael Natividad Ibarra-Brown, was sentenced in Jackson County Circuit Court to six years and three months in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of first-degree sexual abuse. The sentence was for his abuse of the girl while he lived in Jackson County. He also faces a 25-year prison sentence for allegedly raping the girl while he lived in Josephine County, according to court testimony. Ibarra-Brown has been charged with first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy and 10 counts of first-degree sexual abuse in Josephine County Circuit Court. A trial on those charges is scheduled for September. Ibarra-Brown was arrested in July 2014 and has been held in the Jackson County Jail without bail since then. Jackson County Senior Deputy District Attorney Terry Smith-Norton said Thursday the girl was very brave to disclose the abuse. Smith-Norton said she was impressed with the girl's maturity and her commitment to school. The girl's grandmother lashed out at Ibarra-Brown in court, saying the girl grew quiet and withdrawn and never had a chance to be a child. "How could you have ever hurt a baby — a baby?" the grandmother demanded. A tearful Ibarra-Brown apologized and said he never meant to hurt the girl. He said he prays for her every night. "I'm not this person. I'm not. I'm not," he cried out. Jackson County Circuit Judge Kelly Ravassipour said, "Your tears have absolutely no effect on me. Hopefully you get 25 years in Josephine County." She added, "This sentence is not about revenge. It's about justice."
