Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend February 3, 2006 Question and Answer Patrick Weber What don’t people know about you they might find interesting? I have been in a Navy sponsored youth program called the United States Sea Cadet Corps for seven years. The program allows you to train with Navy personnel across the country. My rank is chief petty officer. I was selected to attend two foreign trainings in Scotland and South Korea. It was awesome. How active have you been in building interest in the South Medford program? My family and I have been involved from the beginning. My dad is the head coach for the Panthers, my mom is the manager and I held meetings at South to recruit new players. I was selected as one of the assistant captains our first season and then co- captain. If you ask anyone at South, they can tell you I’m always promoting the hockey team. So if you are reading this come see one of our games at The RRRink. Hockey players love a crowd. What’s the appeal of ice hockey? It’s one of the fastest and most demanding sports there is. Not only do you have to be a good skater, but you also have to handle the puck and shoot while skating forwards and backwards under intense pressure. It’s a nonstop, action-packed sport. Advertisement What’s your personal highlight in sports? Being a defenseman, I am not recognized the same way as forwards who rack up the goals. The job of the defenseman is to break up any breakaways and essentially take the "glory" away from forwards who are streaking down the ice ... My highlight was breaking up roughly four or five of Gianni Assam’s breakaways last game against North Medford. If you could change something about high school sports, what would it be? We need to let the fans go crazy. There is nothing like a good fan section to pump a team up. We need more cowbells. What’s your favorite school subject and why? Spanish. People are speaking it all over the world, so why not know what they are saying. South has a great Spanish department, which has motivated me to continue learning Spanish for the rest of my life. If you could spend an hour with anyone, past or present, who would it be and why? I would like to play hockey for one hour with the U.S. Olympic hockey team. That would be an experience of a lifetime. Something like the movie, "Miracle." Even if I could just watch a practice, that would be awesome. What do you see yourself doing in 10 years? I hope to be traveling the world and have a successful international business career. I might join the CIA and have a job in their clandestine service as an operations officer. In other words, I want to become a spy. Patrick Weber is a senior on the South Medford hockey team.
